Blood Gulch was bad, too, as was Coagulation. Your nostalgia is massively engorged and is cutting off all the blood flow to your brain. A massive open expanse does not a good map make.

I understand the people had fun on Blood Gulch back in the day, but that's not because it was ever a good map. The fun came from fucking around with modded ARs that shot tank rounds and stuff, or flying warthogs around in the sky, but never from any solid competitive gameplay.

1: Solace. WAAAYYY too much scenery in the way, its insane. Bases are compacted with nooks and escapes (its like a halo 2 map), and of course the pointless basement.
2: Ragnarok (yep, i said it, comeatme) its just too damn open. The problem with this map is that it has... nothing! take away the hill in the middle, all you got left is a river and a pelican.
3: Shatter. Just a weird map in general, campy sniper areas, and random rocks. However, every halo game has that ONE weird DLC map, so i really do not mind.

ragnarok is the best map ever of all time

How can you say that Blood Gulch was like having a massive war, did you ever play it or Hemmorhage for that matter. There both awsome with gameplay.

For big team.

Neither map had any semblance of balance. Heck, even Valhalla didn't have balance, it was certainly a step up from Gulch because of the fact that it had reduced sightlines (THANK YOU HILL!).

Both are made for big team, which wont ever be competitive in the same sense that 4v4 is.

Now, for big team only, I think those maps are fun, but they are just that: Bloody maps
People just die, a lot, games go quickly even if they are with 16 people, and this is just because of the maps openness.

Anyways, I still don't understand Abandon. It's far too cluttered as well with random sightlines because of trees (sniped through a branch? OK!). The general layout of the map favors single objective gametypes (which is fine) but it still doesn't do that completely correctly as the flanks are so wide and have extreme sightlines as well. The only places to be are flanks and the middle tower, there is no other place on that map that you want to be ever, and that IMO is an issue. Every time I play it, people take a flank, or they take the tower, and that is what all the fighting is over.

Unfortunately I have been waiting on $$$ to get the new maps, once I have them I will make a new thread just for the DLC maps. I also want to see if we can get some screens of those maps, because they are not included in the link in my OP.

Vortex is not the worst, but there had to be a third map. Now that I have had the chance to play a bit more on Exile, I just don't get Exile...
It's so weird, I just don't want to do anything on that map but crouch.

I've been playing Halo ever since CE came out in 2001. I think I've played Blood Gulch and its clones more than enough to pass judgement on them.

Now Ariel, I have to disagree with your assumption that "competitive" means only 4v4 - BTB can be just as strategic and fast-paced and has an even larger required skillset (try putting Pistola and Naded in a hog and see how they fare against some of the Wheelmen.) However, in order for a BTB match to exhibit that kind of high-level competitive strategy/play, you have to be playing on a map that's not a wide-open piece of shit.

I disagree you still had to be a good driver to avoid flipping on hills and dodging wraith blasts. I'll always be ready for a game in Blood Gulch or one its copies.
