Hey folks,
Buddy here with a little forge tutorial!

Ever had some money/pieces left when the map already has been finished? Why not make a few surroundings?

What do I mean with "surroundings" ?
Well, by that I mean aesthetical extentions of the map. They make the map bigger than it actually is and give the map a whole new flavour. It makes the map more believable, too.

How do you make such surroundings?
Okay, this is pretty simple. Basically you would have a simple wall there
. But just this wall is boring and doesn´t look very authentic. People know: "Hey, there is nothing behind that wall but air/water/... !"
Next step is to see what view the people on the ground have and make sure that no edge of the surroundings or holes destroy the whole look of it.

So it´s kinda like an "illusion" if you know what I mean. :D
Screenshots from two maps will show you exactly what I mean:

Indiana Jones: The Holy Grail

Wuuuuuttt??? :D

Super Catapult (Actually no surroundings here, just using the technique to make something wider and look cool from the distance)

:lmao:

Alright then, I hope I could give you some tips how to envolve your map with this little trick. Could be useful for nearly every kind of map.

Happy forging!

Buddy out.

That's a pretty neat illusion. I could see that working out on some maps, but it would need to be carefully balanced. When more angles are involved, it becomes easily to realize what's happening behind the scenes.

This technique is strongly used throughout level design to make an environment feel larger than it actually is. Also giving depth in the sense of parallax. What you showed above, are examples of created Facades. (just the front face of an object)

Yup, I know that probably many forgers use this, but I just wanted to post it here. ;)
