Halo 5 Hosting Pains

The purpose of this video is to bring attention to some missing features that were very useful for custom game lobby hosts in previous Halo games. Many of these features may only seem relevant to those who host custom game lobbies, but it's important to remember that they also impact the large number of players who like to join lobbies. With the current trend of Halo 5's updates, it seems unlikely that these particular features will return unless we show 343 how much we want them to return. A full file browser has been confirmed for future updates; otherwise, I would have included that as well.

Thank you for putting together this video guys. While this isn't as serious as the MCC situation from about the same time last year, this is still something that absolutely must be addressed. Its quite frankly depressing we don't have some of these features, some that even existed in Halo 2. Definitely front page material.

Yeah these are definitely quality-of-life issues, but having features like these fade away with each new Halo is a disturbing trend that is depressing for those of us who invest so much time into customs/forge. Unfortunately we're starting to get to the point where a good chunk of the fan-base doesn't even know about these features because we've had a few games in a row without them in some cases.

I'm not sure how much I can share here, but I can say that I have passed much of this feedback onto 343 already. The inability to cap party size, pick from open and closed privacy settings, and lack of in-lobby game chat are all issues the team is aware of. You did hit the issue of game chat right on the head: the dedicated server is not set up during lobbies until a map begins loading and players are unable to participate in VOIP on a peer-to-peer basis in the game. Unfortunately, this results from the way the core game systems are set up. The other fixes requested in this video should thankfully be much more feasible, however.

One other thing: while Quinn is indeed a multiplayer designer on the project, most of these issues relate to UI and core systems functionality and are not Quinn's territory. I will inquire and see if I can share the correct contact for this sort of feedback.

All in all, this video was a great idea. Thanks for taking the initiative to help improve custom games, guys!

Thanks for looking into that. I originally tweeted Tom French about stuff like this back in March and he said this was Quinn's territory. Ducain also left a detailed comment on the YouTube video. Basically he was saying that Game Chat and Maximum Player Count won't happen in Halo 5, but hopefully will in Halo 6. He also said that we should eventually get a hard player count of 16 which will be nice.
